I believe that editing is a collaborative, creative process that depends on relationship. A good relationship between the author, the editor(s), and the text is essential to the development of a high-quality final product. I believe that language is changeable and context-dependent, and that idiosyncratic style is something to be preserved. I believe in accessibility of the text to the reader above all other concerns, and I seek elegant solutions that allow the reader a pleasurable reading experience. I seek to help authors move to a point where they can identify problems independently through providing both grammatical and stylistic explanations. I believe that radically altering structures can be a wonderful tool, and that the orality of language can help in most circumstances. Finally, I believe that each text is a gift, a treasure deserving of care and appreciation, and that the author's relationship to the text is the most important part of the work.
I have been editing professionally since 2013, although my informal experience is much longer. Editing was a natural fit for me, because I have long loved the intricacies of grammar and style, and I have an omnivorous reading habit. My love of learning and of reading make editing one of the signal joys of my life; each project offers opportunities for new knowledge and a deeper relationship with the technical aspects of writing. I often say to my clients that I get as much out of my work on their texts as they do!
